How to stay healthy during the World cup- Whether your team wins, loses or draws

Three things can happen in every world cup game – Your team may win, lose or draw. Whatever happens, these outcomes bring with them anxiety, excitement, headaches, or stress, all of which may negatively affect your health. Here are tips to make sure you stay healthy throughout the Brazil 2014 tournament.

Your current state
Problem: If you are faint-hearted or have hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart diseases, it is advisable that you do not watch matches involving teams you support. The anxiety is likely to raise your blood pressure and lead to serious implications.

Solution: a) Get busy and/or sleep during the match and get the score line of the match later or b) simply record and watch it later when you already know the scores.

Eating habits
Problem: Stress, anxiety, loss and or win may lead to an unhealthy increase or decrease in appetite for food. The increase in appetite can be for comfort foods, which are mostly high in sugar, fat and salt and/or eating more food than is needed. Whether it’s an unhealthy increase or decrease in appetite for food, they all carry risks to health.

Solutions:
a) Do not stock your refrigerator or stores with foods high in sugar, fat and salt like fizzy drinks, sweets, crisps etc but rather with more fruits and vegetables. This will make you reach out for a fruit or vegetable instead of sweets, crisps etc.
b) Eat before your team plays. This way, you will have a good appetite and be able to check the amount of food being consumed.
c) Get around and talk with family and friends but make sure they are optimists:). This will help you to forget the pain from the loss of a match and not to seek comfort from foods.
d) Be conscious of the fact that eating habits might be affected by the tournament and hence will require an extra effort to eat healthily.

Physical activity levels
Problem: With at least three matches currently being played and telecasted each day interspersed with match analysis making at least eight hours of non-stop football, becoming sedentary is mostly likely to increase, affecting physical activity levels. That is, one is mostly likely to stay in the couch or bed or whatever it may be for close to eight hours. Sitting and/or lying down for extended periods pose risks to health.

Solution: Whether you will watch all the matches for the day or at least one a day, get up and get active (walk, dance (i.e. if your team is winning), skip, press up or whatever activity works for you) during the half-time breaks as well as the commercial breaks.

Alcohol consumption
Problem:Again stress, anxiety, loss and or win may lead to a start of drinking alcohol and/or an unhealthy increase in alcohol consumption, which poses risks to health.

Solution:Do not stock your refrigerator or stores with alcoholic beverages. Get more tips on using alcohol safely

Sleeping habits
Problem: Sleeping habits are most likely going to be affected due the fact that a) matches may be played in timezone different from yours and/or b) the desire to enjoy every single match.

Solution: For an adult, between 7 – 8 hours of sleep is required so take a nap before the match or record and watch a repeat telecast.

Smoking
Problem: Again strees and anxiety may lead to picking up smoking habits. Also depending on the anti-smoking regulations in your country, you might risk coming into contact with tobacco smoke-filled environment.

Solution: a) The healthy lifestyle guideline for smoking is no smoking. If you do, seek professional help from a health centre.
b) Avoid places, where smoking takes place as secondary smoking also poses risk

Things to remember

Do not drink and drive or drive and drink or both.

It takes 3 weeks to develop a habit (good or bad), the world cup is a month long. Let it end with developing a good habit.

Your team has a health practitioner to make sure players are staying healthy, so why don't you also stay healthy :)?

Any time your team is playing, they are keeping active. Why don’t you also keep active :)?

May the team that wants it most win the World Cup!

He died at 41

Last Saturday, I lost someone who inspired me from a distance. A person whom I never met or spoke to but will wait and listen to him, for few minutes to get inspired before leaving for school when I was a girl. His rise at BBC, was something that always had my heart swelled with pride – the pride of being Ghanaian, the pride of being an African and filled with so much inspiration to make an impact in this our world for he gave me the hope that I can make it. I was in love with his objectiveness, professionalism, his love for his Maker, family, friends, his country, for his continent and for people. So last Saturday, when this Black Star fell, you can imagine the big blow death has given me.

Some news have reported his death as due to a cardiac arrest and other news and posts on Facebook say he struggled with blood pressure which nearly got him to suffer a stroke last year.Only his doctors can tell for sure. But these news caused my public health nutrition mind to think of Non-communicable diseases and to write this post.

Non-communicable diseases which include cardiovascular diseases have become the leading cause of reported deaths globally. Unhealthy lifestyle which includes the list below are their main risk factors.

        1. Poor diet: diets high in fat, high in sugar, high in salt
2      2.  Inadequate physical activity
3      3. Not getting enough rest
4      4. Harmful use of alcohol
5      5. Smoking

Non-communicable diseases impact negatively on the economies of the world as the costs associated with their morbidity and mortalilty are high and hence requiring an urgent need for us to PREVENT them.

As the main risk factors of non-communicable diseases are lifestyle choices, we can prevent them by modifying any unhealthy behaviour we may be engaging in, by;

1       1. Cutting down on our salt intake, at most 6g/day.
2       2.  Including small amount of food high in fat and sugar to our diet.
3       3.   Including more fruits and vegetables in our diet, at least 5 different fruits and vegetables a day.
4       4.  Reading food labels to know the amount of food nutrient, a food product will be contributing to our diet.
5     5.  Getting and staying physically active, at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity in a week.
       6. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep in 24 hour period.
7     7.  If you drink, not doing so above the recommended amount (read more here)
8     8.   If you smoke, seeking help to quit.
9     9. Regularly going for medical check-up, among others.

My Black star who I am bidding farewell today, who in my heart will live, and continually inspire me to be better and to help build a new Africa, died at 41. He accomplished a lot . How I wish he could still enjoy life to the fullest and live it to the longest to continually impact the youth of Africa towards a new Africa. But I know, he has left a great legacy and posterity will always remember him.

Fare thee well you who has inspired me for more over 10 years, fare thee well you who gave me hope of a new Africa, Fare thee well Gallant Black Star, The Hope of Africa, Fare thee well the Boss Player.

Till we meet again, rest in peace.

(Al-So called WHO)

MOTION ON NOTICE
TAKE NOTICE that Quarrelsome & Partners, Lawyers for and on behalf of  the Plaintiff/Applicant herein shall move the Honourable Court for an order of Injunction to stop the Defendant/Respondent herein whether by themselves or their agents, workmen, servants, assigns and all other persons, natural or otherwise claiming through them,  from spear-heading, propagating, facilitating, encouraging or otherwise engendering by any means whatsoever attacks on the semi-good character and high reputation of the Plaintiff/Applicant pending the final determination of the issues between  the parties in terms of this motion paper and the supporting affidavit.
Court to be moved on……..the ……day of ……..2013 at 9.00 in the forenoon or so soon thereafter.

DATED AT SALT-TOWN  CONDOMINIUM THIS …15..DAY OF …July…2013.

SUPPORTING AFFIDAVIT
I, SODIUM CHLORIDE of Salt-town Estates solemnly swear to this affidavit and state that:
  1. I am the Applicant/Deponent and I swear to this affidavit on matters which are within my personal knowledge and experience or have otherwise been brought to my attention in the course of my usage in soups and industries.
  2. For centuries, I have served mankind very well. From being used in cooking meals to preserving food, to being used in food and other product processing. I gladly play my roles. My work doesn’t stop here.
  3. I continue to play roles in your body as well. For instance inside the body, my first name, Sodium regulates blood pressure.
  4. How I do this would require me giving you a physiology lecture which I bet you are probably not ready for.  If you however insist on knowing more, I recommend WHO, FSA, CASH etc websites to read.
  5. I love to read everything readable, listen to everything listenable and watch everything watchable and it was during these activities I came across stories that have saddened my heart leading to the present lawsuit against WHO.
  6. Do you know CASH, WASH, PWASH, AWASH? I am not really bothered about the first letters of the acronyms. What bothers me is the last three letters ASH, Action on Salt and Health. So whether it is consensus or world, the fact that actions are being taken on me is worrying.
  7.  I play good roles especially concerning health, regulating blood pressure. So why would groups, countries, organization take actions on me?
  8. Do you know this year, most health awareness campaigns worldwide are on salt? It is one thing to get the world’s attention with good deeds but it is another when it is for the wrong reasons.
  9. A good campaign to educate the world about my true character is not an abomination to me and I may support it sometimes.
  10. PARTICULARS OF A FRIENDLY CAMPAIGN
a)     Sodium regulates blood pressure. Hence Sodium’s regulation of your blood pressure is a direct response to the amount of Sodium and me you take into your body.
b)     The more of me consumed, the more I put pressure on your blood regulation believing you want it, judging from your heavy intake of me.
c)      For instance, when you consume more than a teaspoonful of me a day (5g/day), you increase the amount of my first name, Sodium in your body. It then puts more pressure on your blood regulation and when this continues your blood pressure becomes elevated.
d)     The unintentional activity of Sodium elevates your blood pressure beyond the normal range. I must however say, other factors contribute to elevated blood pressure but it looks like my activity is the highest of all the risk factors.
e)     This elevated blood pressure predisposes you to hypertension, a major risk factor of cadiovascular diseases.
f)       You know, one in three adults worldwide is hypertensive. I know you would doubt me because the one in three adults you meet show no sign of hypertension. This is because hypertension unlike other diseases has no symptoms making it very dangerous.

  1. The WHO and others intensify educative campaigns on the nitty-gritty of                   my  true character to point out my usefulness and harmfulness.
  2.  All persons beware that they consume salted nuts, chips, pizza, chicken, fries, cereals and many more on their own volition and at their own peril.
  3.  It is only just and equitable that this honourable court orders the WHO and others to refrain from attacking my character and person for the hypertension, heart attacks and sudden death of persons who consume me without restraint.
  4.  Just imagine, how can you complain: “ waiter! There is soup in my salt!” and turn around to blame me? That is injustice.
  5. I solemnly swear.
